All things dark and dreadful,
All terrors great and small,
All things cruel and woeful—
The Lord God made all.
The storm that shreds the forest,
The fire scars the land,
The plague that haunts the cities,
wrought by His own hand.
The beggar cold and starving,
The tyrant on his throne,
The child left lost weeping—
He made them, every one.
The vulture and serpent,
The poison in the well,
The sickness in cradle,
The tolling funeral bell.
The wars that burn nations,
The greed that rules the day,
The hatred in silence—
He did not turn away.
He gave eyes to witness,
And lips to cry in vain,
vast is God Almighty,
Who fashioned joy and pain.
